This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated candidate to join our Radiotherapy team as an Apprentice Dosimetrist. The replacement of 4 linear accelerators (linacs) was completed in 2022 following the installation of our second Halcyon machine, with the Trust working closely with local charities to upgrade one of these Halcyons so that adaptive radiotherapy can be delivered to the patients of Staffordshire through Varian’s Ethos Adaptive Therapy System. In addition to this, several service developments are planned for the coming year including the expansion of our SABR service and our brachytherapy service to include prostate needle therapy. The introduction of these systems into routine use will provide excellent opportunities for personal development.
The post-holder will be expected to
- Participate in a 3-year apprentice program in collaboration with the University of the West of England. The apprenticeship will focus on Radiotherapy Physics, but will also introduce the wider role of Medical Physics within the NHS, leading to the award of the BSc(Hons) in Healthcare Science (Radiotherapy Physics) upon successful completion.
- Provide an efficient and effective specialist dosimetry service to the Radiotherapy Department. This will necessitate flexibility in working hours and participation in local “on-call” rotas.
- Ensure that all the necessary patient data including images and other investigations are available and appropriate for the production of patient treatment plans.
- To produce both simple and complex radiotherapy treatment plans to prescription and agreed procedures e.g. VMAT, to maximise therapeutic efficacy to the tumour and minimise healthy tissue damage.
- To provide assistance to the Mould Room staff in the production of patient immobilisation devices, beam shielding blocks, electron applicator cut-outs using low melting point alloy and bolus for beam modification.
- Sustain any strategic change or improvement in the delivery of the service as agreed with the Chief Radiotherapy Dosimetrist.
